The best way to start learning to play the guitar is to first have a strong desire to play. If the guitar is comfortable in your arms and on your lap, you are off to a good start. Some people choose to start out by finding a decent teacher to provide guitar lessons on a regular basis. Guitar lessons can help a student to not only learn proper techniques of playing the guitar but to also learn to read music.
Some guitar players choose to start playing the guitar by simply picking up the instrument and learning to play on their own. Instead of taking guitar lessons, such musicians learn by listening to music and playing along. This can be a good way to start for the talented self starters who are willing to have patience with themselves and a very intensive learning process. Starting to play guitar without guitar lessons can create a situation of a diverse creative process that is likely to be accompanied by many mistakes.
So, to learn to play the guitar without making unnecissary mistakes, a person needs to find a proper instructor to give guitar lessons. This will probably be a guitarist with experience and a good ability to instruct. The dynamic between the instructor and the student should be friendly yet focussed. The guitar lessons will probably begin slowly so that the student can learn the primary basics of playing the guitar. As time passes the guitar lessons will become more intensive and complicated. Perhaps the student and the instructor will even play together. Of coarse the lessons will only be effective if the student practices between the lessons. A person can not become a guitar player unless he truly loves it and has a desire to play. This is something that a guitar instructor can not only recognize but also help to develope in the student.
